Carlos Alcaraz has been the eighth Spanish tennis player to rise to fourth place in the ATP international rankingsposition in which he will appear on Monday after standing in the final of the tournament in Umag (Croatia), adding his name to a list that includes Rafa Nadal, Carlos Moyá, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Álex Corretja, Manuel Orantes, David Ferrer and Sergi Bruguera.
The 19-year-old from Murcia fought this Sunday for the ATP 250 title he already won last year – his first as a professional-, and his victory by 7-5, 4-6 and 6-3 against the Italian Giulio Zeppieri in the semifinals allowed him to climb one position so far with his 5,035 points already confirmed and surpass the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas.
He is still ahead of the Russian Daniil Medvedev, the German Alexander Zverev and Nadal, while in the classification of the year only the Majorcan is higher than Alcaraz who now in 2022 has 41 wins and only six losses and has obtained four title, the Masters 1,000 in Miami and Madrid and the ATP 500 in Rio de Janeiro and Barcelona.
Seven Spaniards surpass him in history: Nadal, Moya and Ferrerohis current coach, who came to occupy number 1; Corretja and Prayerwhich is in second place, and Ferrer and Bruguerawhich reached the third.
In the final this Sunday in Umag, the opponent is the Italian Jannik Sinnerwho defeated his compatriot Franco Agamenone 6-1 and 6-3 in just 1 hour and 25 minutes, which is how long the second semifinal took.
The 20-year-old from San Cándido and world number 10 knocked out Alcaraz in the round of 16 at Wimbledon on July 3.
