The Football Association of England (FA) launched an investigation after flares broke out during Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Manchester City in their Community Shield match on Saturday.
Goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Darwin Núñez helped Liverpool win the opening game of the season at Leicester’s King Power Stadium, where red smoke enveloped the pitch at times.
“We are aware of incidents during the Community Shield where flares were used in the stands. The use of smoke bombs or pyrotechnics in a football stadium is dangerous, illegal and can have serious consequences,” the FA said.
“We can confirm that we are investigating the matter and will work with the relevant authorities, the club and the police to identify the individuals involved and take appropriate action.” “We hope the club will also investigate these incidents and implement new rules where appropriate.”
The FA, Premier League and Football League last week announced tougher penalties for pitch invasions and the use of smoke bombs and fireworks, and announced automatic club bans for offences.
