The Galtier era started on a high note as PSG claimed their 11th French Super Cup with an emphatic win over Nantes at Tel Aviv’s Bloomfield Stadium. A 4-0 that reflected the superiority and good play of the Parisians, whose goals came from Leo Messi, Neymar, with a wonderful free-kick and penalty, and Sergio Ramos, who had his back to the goal.
PSG, current champions of Ligue 1, came out very focused and eager to convince in the first official match with Galtier on the bench. A team that, as expected, dominated the ball and had a very offensive vocation, took advantage of the increase of their lines Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes, protected behind three central defenders, including Sergio Ramos .
Messi and Neymar, in the absence of the suspended Kylian Mbappé, confirmed the good feeling they showed during the tour of Japan and, in the 5th minute, they started a good combination that ended with Achraf with a shot denied by the goalkeeper which is Alban Lafont.
After a quarter of an hour Marquinhos headed the crossbar after a corner was taken by Messi, but Nantes, who until then had barely budged, woke up with two chances in quick succession. For the second time Ludovic Blas forced Gianluigi Donnarumma to shine with a whiplash that went into the top corner (20′).
Neymar assisted Messi to make it 1-0
A very serious, disciplined and physically fit PSG gave cup champions Nantes no options and, two minutes later, opened the scoring. Neymar put a deep pass into the middle, Valencian Pedro Chirivella deflected it in his attempt to block it and left Messi in front, who managed to get past Lafont and score into an empty net. It was the Argentine’s 32nd career goal in a final.
PSG controlled the tempo of the match against a Nantes team looking for quick transitions to surprise. But Messi made it 2-0 when he stole the ball from Nicolas Pallois and, quickly, stood up to Lafont, who covered his cross shot (44′).
Messi leaves 2-0 for Neymar
In stoppage time in the first half, Messi jumped on top of the ball so Neymar executed a free-kick well. 2-0 practically sentenced the game and it was Sergio Ramos, smart in defence, who finished it with his heels and turned his back on the goal after Lafont rejected a cross from Pablo Sarabia preventing the Andalusian from finishing for the first time (57′). It was the fourth goal for the former Madrid player since his arrival at PSG last season.
Neymar, PSG’s fifth historical scorer
Neymar, who performed at a good physical level for 90 minutes like Messi, put the icing on the cake of his great performance by earning a penalty and a straight red card from Jean-Charles Castelletto and that -converts the resulting penalty (81′) . The Brazilian is now PSG’s fifth all-time top scorer with 102 goals.
A 4-0 good starting point for PSG in this new phase.
