“I always want to get in on the right foot”

Date:

How does Eliana Fernández feel to be among the Spanish arbitration elite?

Well, I feel privileged… it’s the prize for having been working for so many years.

And after these first days of working with the group in the pre-season in Segovia?

From the first day I arrived, everyone welcomed me with open arms. These are working days, but with the great atmosphere we have, you’ll enjoy it twice as much.

Where were you when you heard the news? Do you remember?

I am with my mother at home. It was a great joy. As soon as I received the news, I immediately shared it with everyone close to me.

Where does your passion for arbitration come from in this case for being an assistant?

From a young age at home, my parents tried me to practice any kind of sport. My father liked football a lot and I gradually acquired his taste… I would have liked to play football officially but it just happened. First I started as a referee and over time I fell in love with the band.

Vertigo for what’s coming to you?

I’m not too excited! I try to give it the maximum normality, after all, I will be doing the same thing that I have been doing all these years

She is the second woman in professional arbitration along with Guadalupe Porras. have you talked to him

Yes, we are lucky enough to work together in international competition matches, so we live many experiences together!

What advice did he give you?

Well, keep doing what you’re doing now and keep working.

Which referee will you go to as an assistant? With your compatriot González Fuertes?

We are lucky to have three Asturians from the same city (Gijón) in the first division, but this year I will be very happy to work with Pulido Santana, a Canarian referee.

I read that you argue that to err is human and we should try to relativize it

Our great ally on the field as referees is success, but we are human and we fail like everyone else, we should try to live with it and minimize it as much as possible. Today, we have many resources to refine and improve the situations we are given. We work every day for this.

How did your passion for refereeing come about?… I read that it was from a high school talk… Can you explain it to me in detail?

Well, one day at the institute during a tutorial, a member of the Asturian committee of referees gave us a talk about refereeing, also to try to attract new referees. At that moment, without thinking about it, I signed up to do the training and still do

What goal have you set for your refereeing career?

I try to always set myself short-term goals and go beyond arbitration. It’s a long-distance race and you can’t set big goals in a short period of time. For now, make a good debut and adapt as quickly as possible to the category.

Do you think we’ll soon see a woman whistling in the First Division?

Yes, I’m sure that day will come. Today we are 3 women in professional football as assistant referees. But the referees who come from the lower categories do the work and effort that tomorrow will bring them the reward of reaching the first division.

What do you think of Marta Huerta’s role in the Women’s European Championship?

infallible. Marta is a great person and at the same time a great referee who always makes things very easy on the pitch.

What does Eliana think about VAR?

Well, it’s a tool that helps all of us referees on the pitch make football fairer. And also don’t go home with a mistake or harm any team.

There is no doubt that Spanish arbitration is one of the best in the world.

We can enjoy Spanish referees in all competitions, Champions, Europa League, European Championships, World Cups… both at Var level and on the field… we can be proud that the level is so high.

What does a good soccer assistant need?

In my opinion, a good assistant should be careful, work with discipline and, above all, be objective to improve.

Do you think there is machismo in football?

Ever since I started arbitration, they treated me like someone else.

What was your worst moment on a football field?

I don’t remember any particular moment but unfortunately when you see situations of disrespect or violent moments. Especially in base football games.

And the best?

I’ve had great games like the playoffs, and the feeling of finishing and having a good job is the best feeling a referee can have.

Do you know what you will do the day you make your debut in the First Division?

The same thing I do all this time, enjoy the moment and hit as much as possible.

Do you have a special hobby before every game?

I’m not a manic person but I like to enter the pitch with the right foot.
