Pep Guardiola, manager of Manchester City, sent a message of calm after Saturday’s defeat against Liverpool in the Community Shield (3-1). Despite losing to his great rival in English football in the first pulse of the season, the coach kept his faith in his players intact.
“There is no reason not to trust. What these guys have done, not only in the Premier, in national cups and in Europe, says it all,” said Guardiola.
“I don’t know what will happen this season, but I’m sure I know these guys. I don’t have any doubts for a second. I don’t have any doubts about them for a second,” stressed Pep, who when last season led City to a fourth Premier League title in five seasons but could not ratify this condition in the Community Shield against Liverpool, last year’s FA Cup and League Cup winners.
Guardiola said that “a few days ago (July 23) we played against Bayern Munich and did a very good job (winning 0-1 in Green Bay (USA) with a goal from Erling Haaland) and against Liverpool We did we’re doing great things. I don’t feel like we’re far away.”
Kalvin Phillips’ progressive adaptation
Guardiola left Kalvin Phillips on the bench in the Community Shield but said the English international midfielder, signed this summer from Leeds for €48.7m, would be gradually brought into the squad.
“He’s confident, he’s ready to play,” Guardiola said. “He arrived only three weeks ago and we have Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gündogan who already know our game. But step by step you will get it. In many games he will help us”.
City begin their Premier League defense next Sunday by visiting West Ham.
