the russian Daniil Medvedev, the top seed, defeated Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis 6-2, 6-2 on Thursday and qualified for the semifinals of the Los Cabos Tennis Open, ATP 250 tournament.
With 80 percent of the points won on his first serve, Medvedev began to impose conditions and in the fifth game he broke the 2-2 tie with, from there, string together a chain of five consecutive ‘games’ and cruised to a 6-2 victory in 44 minutes.
In that first round, Medvedev converted two of the three break chances he had and defended what he was, the world number one, with two options the Lithuanian had to break his serve.
Medvedev, accurate from the bottom of the pitch, continued his string of ‘game’ wins; he started the second set with a couple of breaks which he secured to make it 4-0 against an opponent who, once again, showed great effectiveness on his first serve.
Berankis never gave up the match, holding her serve in the fifth game and stopping her rival’s string of games won at eight, but Medvedev continued his good tennis, he came close to the other shore by going 5-1 and secured the match in the eighth game, after the Lithuanian won the seventh.
“I’m on my favorite surface and I’m confident, but the longer the tournament goes on, the more difficult the matches will be.“, said Medvedev, who added his win 251 on the tour.
In the semifinal Medvedev will face Serbian Miomir Kecmakovicfourth seed, who defeated American Brandon Nakashima 6-2, 6-4, in a match where the number 38 in the world ranking was superior.
The other semifinal will be played by Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassimeninth on the ATP list, defeating American Steve Johnson 6-4, 7-6(3) and the British Cameron Norriedefending champion and twelfth in the ranking, defeating Moldovan Radu Albot, 118th in the world ranking, 6-3, 7-6(4).
The Los Cabos Open is played on hard court with a prize pool of $920,635; It is one of the competitions before the 1,000 Masters in Cincinnati and Montreal and the US Open, the fourth Grand Slam of the season.
