The Spanish women’s team will travel with a rolling team to the European Championships in Munich

Naa Munich Olympics 1972 cycling was held without a women’s event. The organizers did not think that women could compete on the bicycle in the same way as men. Cycling, one of the sports that has been around since the first edition of the Games in 1896, has not yet developed. After 50 years, women roll through the streets of Munich in the official competition celebrating the European Championship (from August 17 to 21).

The Spanish National Team will go to the event with a strong team of seven members with a rolling profile to face with the guarantees of a circuit -of 129.8 km route and 24 km time trial- that does not show great inequality and where it is expected to have great speed. Sara Martín, Sandra Alonso, Lourdes Oyarbide, Ziortza Isasi, Sheyla Gutiérrez, Yurani Blanco and Mireia Benito they are chosen by the selector Paschal gem to form a block that fits the profiles of the Bavarian route arriving at Odeonsplatz, in the old part of Munich.

The two selected to compete in the 24 km time trial in Furstenfeldbruck are Sandra Alonso and Ziortza Isasi. The great absentees at this Continental were the two Spanish representatives at the Tokyo Games, Mavi Garcia and Ane Santestebanwho just competed with great intensity in the Women’s Tour de France.

At the European Championships in Munich (from August 11 to 21), 4,700 participants from nine different sports will gather (athletics, beach volleyball, canoeing, rowing, cycling, artistic gymnastics, climbing, table tennis and triathlon. In the case of cycling, there will be 770 participants fighting for 90 medals at stake in four modalities, track, road, BMX and BTT.
