Pecco Bagnaia became the first rider to take four MotoGP victories this year at Silverstone and was able to take advantage of Aleix Espargarò’s physical problems and Fabio Quartararo’s penalty when he seemed to be missing from the action all weekend.
When he arrived at Parc Fermé Pecco he thanked Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner and explained why he gave them all the credit for this victory. “I spoke a lot with Valentino these days and he helped me a lot to understand the situation because I was struggling. It wasn’t easy for me because I was at home, but he advised me to focus on the tires and their temperature. He gave me a lot of support, as well as morale, and ‘I touched his balls a lot these days’. He was always there and being able to take advantage of his experience was helpful”.
“I wrote to Stoner asking him how he can be fast on this track and he replied this morning. At Silverstone you need a lot of traction and I tried to follow the path he showed me, even though I couldn’t do it 100%. At the end of the race it was over the tire, then I went back to my usual style of driving, braking hard,” he explained.
Putting two historic rivals like Rossi and Stoner to ‘work’ for him is a challenge: “The best thing is that, despite being great rivals, there is a lot of respect between them. I thank them both, as well as my team for their excellent work.
The man from Turin acknowledged that “it was one of my best victories. This morning, in the warmup, using the rear hard tire solved some problems and in the race I found more”.
He recovered 42 points in two races from Quartararro but he doesn’t want to think about the title: “It’s a lot, but I don’t want to think about the championship, just about being competitive in Austria. Now it’s important to take advantage of the situation : Fabio lost time on a long lap, if he was in front with a medium rear tire he would have been fast but Zarco closed him, if Aleix hadn’t crashed yesterday he would have been in front”.
“For the first time this year I was fast after starting in a difficult situation. My goal is always to be competitive, but under normal circumstances Quartararo was there fighting me. I’m happy, I did the a great job , but it’s better to think race by race”.
Regarding the fight with Viñales, he explained that “I was close to him two years ago, in Misano, but I fell. Maverick is tough, but to come and catch me he has to use the rear tire a lot. I went long and returned I’m on track. In Jerez, against Quartararo, although there was no overtaking, it was more difficult to win. However, on an emotional level, this victory was better”.
