Daniil Medvedev, number 1 in the world, Carlos Alcaraz, second seed, and Stefanos Tsitsipas, third favorite, said goodbye. this Wednesday’s Montreal Masters 1,000, falling in their premieres against Nick Kyrgios, Tommy Paul and Jack Draper, respectively.
They were also joined by Russian Andrey Rublevworld number 8 and fifth favourite, losing against the British Daniel Evans.
The fall of the three big favorites stood on a day where Spanish tennis recorded the brilliant victories of Pablo Carreño, Roberto Bautista and Albert Ramosthe latter after defeating Argentine Diego Schwartzman.
The first surprise came in the Canadian morning, when Alcaraz surrendered after a battle of three hours and 19 minutes against Tommy Paul, number 34, lost his third game of fifteen played on a fast surface in 2022.
The Murcian fell 6-7(4), 7-6(7) and 6-3 and squandered a 4-1 lead in the second set. He also had a match point in the second set tie break, before falling to Paul’s return.
Alcaraz, winner of the 1,000 tournaments in Miami and Madrid, will appear again next week in the Cincinnati tournament, where the presence of Rafa Nadal, who is not in Canada due to injury, was confirmed on Wednesday.
But the removal of the Murcian was not the only surprise of the day. After some time, Medvedev, recent champion in Los Cabos, lost to Nick Kyrgios of 6-7(2), 6-4 and 6-2.
Kyrgios, who won the tournament in Washington three days ago, is experiencing one of the best moments of his career and won fourteen of his last fifteen matches, with a loss in the Wimbledon final against Serb Novak Djokovic being the only defeat.
In the round of 16, Kyrgios will play in the Australian derby against Alex De Minaurwinner against Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov.
Added to the list of surprises was Tsitsipas, who lost 7-5, 7-6(4) to the powerful ‘drive’ of left-hander Jack Draper, only 20 years old and number 82 in the world.

Draper triumphed in two hours and two minutes after a game in which Tsitsipas was burdened by his errors free with rights. In total, he made up to 36 unforced errors.
The Greek, a finalist in this tournament in 2018, made way for a Draper who celebrated the first victory of his career against a top-10 player.
Among other meetings Carreño, number 23 in the world, won 6-0 and 6-3 against Runea rival he has beaten in two previous encounters, in Metz 2021 and this year in Halle.
the Spanish player confirmed the high level of tennis displayed on Tuesday, when he powerfully defeated the Italian Matteo Berrettini, number 14 in the world and is often very competitive on fast surfaces. A possible duel against Italian Jannik Sinner awaits him in the round of 16.
Bautista also wonnumber 18 in the world, beating Jenson Broosby, number 46 in the ranking, 7-5, 6-1, in one hour and 26 minutes.
