the cycling team Astana Qazaqstan announced this Thursday, through a statement, the “unilateral and immediate termination” of the Italian broker contract Michele Gazzoli, suspended of the International Cycling Union (UCI) for doping.
“The Astana Qazaqstan Team categorically states that the team had nothing to do with this unfortunate anti-doping rule violation by rider Michele Gazzoli,” the note explained.
Gazzoli tested positive in an anti-doping control on February 17during the Tour of the Algarve in Portugal, when the presence of the banned substance Tuaminoheptane was detected in his blood.
After the positive, the Italian explained to the UCI and his team that the substance entered his body “accidentally”, due to the use of a nasal medicine called Rhinofluimucil.
According to Gazzoli, he obtained the drug “independently, without any involvement in the medical services” of the Astana team and without their permission or supervision.
Due to the facts exposed, the UCI considered the case an “unintentional violation” of anti-doping regulations, which limited the severity of the penalty.
Finally, the UCI imposed on the young 23-year-old cyclist a year of ineligibility that will prevent him from competing as a professional during that time, in addition to the disqualification of his results at the Tour of the Algarve . EFE
