Halep defeated Pegula and was the first finalist in Toronto

the Romanian Simona Halepworld number 16, came back and won this Saturday 2-6, 6-3 and 6-4 against the American Jessica Pegulanumber 7 in the ranking, and qualified for the final of the WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto.

Two-time champion of this tournament, in 2016 and 2018, he will fight for the title against one between the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia and the Czech Karolina Pliskova.

Beyond this Sunday’s result, Halep is sure to return, starting next Monday, among the top ten players in the world ranking, a group that has been missing since August of last year.

And that Pegula, the highest-ranked player left in Toronto, has been playing high-level tennis and reached this round after overturning a match point against Italian Camila Giorgi.

The American won the first set 6-2, but Halep, the player with the most wins in WTA 1000 tournaments (184), reacted with character.

He leveled the duel at 6-3 and had two consecutive breaks in the third set, in the fifth and seventh games, to pave his way to victory.

He won the match 6-4 after two hours and 13 minutes and will fight this Sunday for his third title on Canadian soil.

On her way to the final, Halep also managed to eliminate the American Coco Gauff in the quarterfinals.

The Romanian comes out on top in previous clashes against both Haddad Maia (2-1) and Pliskova (8-4).
