United in free fall

Date:

Cristiano Ronaldo returned to basics, with his future still in doubt, in the lopsided defeat at Brentford

Manchester United continue in free fall. The Red Devils were humiliated by Brentford, who backed United in a painful 4-0 win on matchday two of the Premier League. Even the return to ownership of Cristiano Ronaldo, whose future still keeps Mancunian fans in suspense and who played 19 minutes, helped Ten Hag’s team achieve their first win of the season.

The afternoon couldn’t have started worse for Manchester United, who saw Josh Dasilva’s early goal put their rivals ahead in the opening ten minutes. The English midfielder scored the first goal of the game with a low shot from outside the box, benefiting from a disastrous mistake by David de Gea. The Spanish goalkeeper was unable to block the leather and watched it slip through his hands when it looked like the game wasn’t much of a threat.

The late goals from Mathias Jensen, Ben Mee and Brian Mbeumo ultimately confirmed the poor image of the Manchester team, which have yet to open their points record at this start to the Premier League. Outside of Europe’s top league, one of the main reasons Cristiano Ronaldo could be more outside than inside the Ten Hag-led squad is that it doesn’t look like it could be a better year for the Red Devils.

Brentford, who is in his second year at the highest level, once again showed United’s embarrassment. A defeat that makes it clear that the member of the ‘Big Six’ is not going through his best period. Gone are the days when the Red Devils dominated the British tournament with the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson at the helm.
