Brazilian Haddad Maia reaches her first WTA 1,000 final

Date:

the brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maianumber 24 in the world ranking, defeated Czech Karolina Pliskova, number 14, this Saturday 6-4 and 7-6(7), and qualified for the final of the Toronto tournament, the first of her WTA 1,000 career.

Haddad Maia became the first Brazilian to reach the final of a WTA 1,000 tournament and will play this Sunday against Romanian Simona Halep, who eliminated American Jessica Pegula.

The Brazilian player, born in Rio de Janeiro in 1996, was the star of a rare tournament, in which he managed to eliminate the Polish Iga Swiatek, number 1 in the world.

She now has 17 wins on the circuit since last June, the second best mark behind French Carolina Garcia’s twenty wins.

She edged past a Pliskova with significantly more experience at this point in 1,000 tournaments, by playing in her 13th semi-final. In addition, the Czech was last year’s finalist in this tournament, which was played in Montreal.

Haddad Maia made the most of her excellent start on serve, earning two breaks against Pliskova in the first and fifth games to go up 6-4.

She also had the merit of not giving up the fight in the second set, when Pliskova seemed to be in control of the game.

The Czech escaped at 5-2, but at that moment he got stuck and lost his serve in favor of 5-4, when he served to tie the game.

Haddad Maia forced the tiebreak and overturned a set point at 6-7 before sealing his ticket to the final at 9-7.

She will face Halep this Sunday, where she has a balance of two losses to one win.
