The Brazilian ex-pilot Emerson Fittipalditwo-time Formula 1 world champion, will be one of the candidates for the Senate in the next Italian election led by the Brothers of Italy party, led by far-right Giorgia Meloni.
The two-time world champion with Lotus in 1972 and Mclaren-Ford in 1974, of Italian descent, will appear in the South American constituency of the party, although sources close to the formation told Efe that the lists not yet closed.
However, Fittipaldi himself, who at the time expressed his surprise at the Aston Martin team’s signing of Spaniard Fernando Alonso for next campaign, acknowledged that he will participate in the elections and that he is thinking that of some proposals in the event of being elected.
“I am very happy to be a candidate for the Italian Senate in the elections of September 25. I have already put several proposals on paper and they are all aimed at promoting actions related to Brazilians with strong ties in the Italian lands, culture and sport. I hope to have the support of the voters of Brazil and Latin America, but also of those who live in Italy, and of the Italians who have always been my supporters”, he explained in a statement published this Monday of ‘Il Giornale’.
Meloni, leader of Italy’s far-right Brotherhood, starts as favorite for the September 25 general election and polls give him the support of a fifth of Italians to become the next prime minister.
The right-wing alliance, formed by his party, the far-right League and the conservative Forza Italia (of Silvio Berlusconi), could reach more than 45% of the polls, according to the latest polls, with more than 10 points above the coalition of the left, formed by the Democratic Party (PD) and other groups.
The leader of the PD, Enrico Letta, warned yesterday, Sunday, that the Brothers of Italy is like the Vox party, of the Spanish extreme right, while this week Meloni denied that there would be an “anti-democratic drift” in the country if win and condemn fascism.
