New Kia Niro, featuring original body design and hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains

By cleverly combining form and function, Kia has achieved a car that will encourage many people to take an important step towards electric mobility. The new Niro is based on the third generation of the South Korean brand’s platform, designed exclusively to accommodate various drive systems and stands out for its torsional rigidity. Kia engineers took full advantage of this structure by tuning the suspension and steering systems to provide a high level of comfort, as well as an agile and confidence-inspiring driving experience behind the wheel. With a length of 4.42 m, a width of 1.82 m, a height of 1.57 m and a wheelbase of 2.72 m, the new Niro improves cabin proportions and storage capacity.

Plug-in PHEV and hybrid HEV versions benefit from Kia’s Smartstream 1.6 GDI petrol engine combined with the second-generation 6DCT six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The HEV hybrid variant (from 27,450 euros) produces a maximum power of 141 hp when the four-cylinder 1.6-liter GDI petrol engine is combined with the 32 kW electric drive. The plug-in PHEV version (from 36,000 euros), whose electric motor reaches 62 kW, offers 183 hp power and offers an electric range of up to 65 km, enough for most daily trips. The new electric Niro EV (from 39,900 euros) offers a range of up to 460 kilometers with an output of 150 kW (204 hp) and an instantaneous torque of 255 newton meters that deliver high performance, with a maximum speed of 167 km / h and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.8 seconds. The 64.6 kWh batteries charge from 10 to 80% in 43 minutes with a powerful DC charger, under optimal conditions.

The new Niro is based on Kia’s highly flexible and fully electrified third-generation ‘K’ platform. This structure provides several options for locating the battery depending on the powertrain. The hybrid HEV model has it under the back seat; the plug-in PHEV, which is located under the floor at the level of the rear seat; on the electric Niro it is located in the central area of the floor. With each configuration, the extra weight is placed where it is most suitable for the mass balance and size of the vehicle. The new Niro has received improvements to the suspension and steering over its predecessor, making it more responsive and enjoyable to drive. The MacPherson front and rear multilink struts are tuned for responsiveness, stability and comfort.

The front of the new Niro showcases the latest evolution of Kia’s signature Tiger Face, which now extends to the front wings. The 100% electric version (e-Niro) differs from the PHEV and HEV by a closed two-tone grille and unique steel-grey side protection. With improved proportions thanks to the new platform, the new Niro has more space for occupants and luggage, compared to the first-generation model. Front seat occupants enjoy 1,028mm of headroom and 1,053mm of legroom, while rear headroom is 1,005mm on the HEV and PHEV versions and 967mm on the e-Niro.

Inside, all key controls are ergonomically positioned for easy operator access. An off-center dashboard houses two frameless 10.25-inch (26 cm) screens side by side to control the driving and infotainment systems, while a touch panel makes it possible to adjust ventilation and heating. A Head-up Display (HUD) system projects essential driving information, such as speed, data from safety systems and navigation directions, directly onto the windshield.

The second-generation Niro includes a full complement of Kia’s DriveWise intelligent driver assistance systems. The emergency brake assist system provides audible and visual warnings to the driver (or slows down) if the system detects a potential collision with other vehicles on the road or with pedestrians. When you reach an intersection and activate the turn signal, the forward collision avoidance system for intersections is activated. On the electric e-Niro model, the system warns the driver if there is a risk of collision with an approaching vehicle from the opposite direction or from the side. If the system has issued a warning, but the driver takes no action, it will brake automatically to avoid a collision.

All these devices are combined with the information from the front view camera and the navigation system to display the speed limit at all times. The intelligent speed limit assistant shows that limit and, after confirmation by the driver, adjusts the determined speed. The Niro’s occupants are also protected by Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Following Assist, Highway Traffic Assist, Driver Fatigue Detection, Automatic High Beam Switching, navigation-based smart cruise, blind spot detection system, parking assist camera and rear collision avoidance.

A number of useful technologies help when parking and exiting the vehicle. The remote control parking system allows the driver to complete the parking maneuver remotely using the remote control in tight spaces, in a straight line forwards or backwards, assisted by ultrasonic sensors. In driver-controlled parking, the Parking Exit Collision-Avoidance Assist system and the front and rear parking sensors help maneuver in the most difficult spaces. Once parked, the safe exit assistant warns when leaving the vehicle if a vehicle is approaching from behind; in this case, the electronic lock prevents rear seat passengers from opening their doors.
