If the technical inspection of the vehicle shows only minor defects, it will not be rejected
Failure to meet minimum safety requirements or releasing polluting and harmful emissions into the atmosphere that exceed what is legally permitted are the two
top reasons why cars are rejected during mandatory technical inspections. The number can be significantly reduced, as the greatest number of defects occur in systems that can be directly controlled by the users themselves.
Specifically, according to the data collected by AECA-ITV, the chapter in which the most serious defects were found was lighting and signalling (24.1% of the serious defects occurred in this chapter), followed by axles, wheels, tires and suspension ( 21.7%). If the user checked and repaired the lighting, signaling and tires before going to ITV, the number of serious defects would certainly decrease. With regard to lighting, the most important thing is to check that all lights are working and properly regulated. In addition to making sure that the lamp works, it is necessary to check that the optics are not broken or discolored by the sun. As for the tires, you should check that they are not worn out. To do this, the tires contain wear indicators that tell us whether the depth is greater than 1.6 mm or not.
With regard to emissions interference, you must pass the gas test, or opacity, which measures the level of smoke in the exhaust. To do this, the engine is moved from idle to declutching speed (injection cut), creating accelerations. For example, the levels are measured that must be within the permitted limits.
But there is no maximum number of minor defects that will prevent the ITV from passing through. If the vehicle’s technical inspection has only minor defects, it will not be rejected, according to TÜV Rheinland, who also state that as you can see on the back of the ITV test report they provide, a minor defect means it rectified as soon as possible, otherwise the defect could become serious. For example, you can pass the ITV with a burnt out brake light, but if you don’t fix it quickly, another could burn out and then become a serious breakdown, while the ITV has already passed. And according to the highway code, you are obliged to drive the vehicle in perfect condition, otherwise you could be penalized.
While you can get through the ITV with any number of minor flaws, one major flaw is enough to disqualify the inspection. You will then have a maximum of two months to rectify the serious defects and return to the ITV station so that we can verify that the repair has been carried out satisfactorily. You should know that with the unfavorable ITV you can only drive the vehicle to take it to the workshop.
If you return to the same ITV station within 15 days in the event of a serious breakdown, the second inspection is free. If you exceed these 15 days, but your vehicle is within the two month period from the unfavorable, you will only have to pay 60% of the total price of the ITV. If you go over the two month period you will have to pay the full price of the ITV again.
