A computer relates the same license plates, checks the pass times and calculates the average speed of the vehicle
The so-called ‘section speed cameras’ are a way of checking speed, not at specific kilometer points, as fixed speed cameras do, but on road sections of several kilometers.
Speed-controlled road sections are equipped with artificial vision cameras. Located at both ends of the section, they calculate the average speed of each vehicle and punish those who exceed the limit.
The section radars have been operational since 2010, they are installed on highways, dual carriageways and conventional roads and can be several kilometers long. The DGT’s first controlled speed section was installed in the Guadarrama tunnel, on the A6, between Madrid and Segovia.
To warn drivers of the proximity of a controlled speed section, it is pre-signaled with the associated panel.
They are not really ‘radar’ in themselves, like speedometers. It is a system of cameras that continuously record and identify the license plate of each vehicle at the entrance and exit of the section. A computer relates the same license plates, checks the pass times and calculates the average speed of the vehicle.
If the average speed of the ride is below the limit, there is no violation. But if the average speed of the trip exceeds the limit, the complaint of the violation will be considered.
