The process of electrification of cars in Spain could be faster, but delays in processing permits to install public charging points mean that this infrastructure is growing very slowly.
This became apparent during the 7th Nissan Forum, in which experts analyzed the present and future of electric mobility.
At this event, Raquel Blanco, Global Director of Smart Mobility at Iberdrola, emphasized the “commitment of all governments to sustainable mobility”, but asked to “speed up the processing of electric vehicle charging points on public roads. The three administrations intervene in processing and it takes between 20 and 30 months to obtain the permits. Iberdrola currently has more than 2,000 charging points in the pipeline that could already be operational. In addition to its own utility, the increase in charging points will attract electric cars, because “the simple fact that the dots are visible makes people consider buying an electric car.”
Iberdrola’s Global Director of Smart Mobility aims to “lead the development of public charging stations and remove these barriers for the user. We have approved a plan of 150 million euros in investment to launch 50,000 charging points, with more than 2,500 public points, so that the habit is similar to going to a gas station, because in fast charging stations you can charge energy to do 100 kilometers in just five minutes. We think that the electric one is for the city, but it is also useful for intercity journeys with a good charging infrastructure ».
For Borja Carabante, Mobility Delegate of Madrid City Council, “the roll-out of infrastructure by public and private actors is vital. Public administration should use it and help it, subsidize it and not create obstacles. It also demands “legislative unification so that it is just as easy to deploy infrastructure in all communities” and “lead by example and that public vehicles are electric so that the user sees that electric mobility is there and believes more.” ” in the”.
It was also emphasized that another element that will help make electric vehicles popular is their low running costs. “Electricity reaches everywhere and we can charge our car at home for a very cheap price. There are nightly rates, such as Iberdrola’s for charging electric vehicles, with a cost of 50 cents for 100 kilometers. And at public fast charging stations it costs 6-7 euros for that distance, a competitive price compared to petroleum-derived fuels.”
Borja Carabante points out that “a user has already written off the difference in purchase price between an electric and a combustion car in four years. An electric one means a saving of 2,000 to 4,500 euros per year compared to a car with a combustion engine, depending on the use. The electrical costs still more as their technologies are more advanced and the materials used are scarcer. But little by little, that difference gets smaller to correspond to the thermal ».
Carabante also wanted to point out another advantage of electric cars, which is “a small energy cell that moves and can help the electricity grid. In the Ajax stadium, in Amsterdam, there are more than 150 old Leaf batteries to absorb peaks in electricity consumption. In Melilla, to give another example, 80 batteries have been installed to serve as emergency generators in the event of a breakdown.
