Spain, suspended for road safety

Date:

The car remains the preferred mode of transport in the city for users who are not very concerned about road safety. These are some of the main conclusions of the Fesvial Road Safety and Mobility Barometer 2022, conducted by the Spanish Road Safety Foundation (Fesvial) and Michelin, which in this edition focused on the basic issues of road safety and mobility in large cities.

The study, conducted in major Spanish cities, shows that, despite the different sustainable mobility policies and measures being implemented,
60.5% of people living in big cities admit to using the car for their usual trips, whether it is a private vehicle, public transport (taxi or VTC) or shared car, where the safety, comfort and load capacity of this means of transport are especially appreciated. The car is followed by public transport (18.8%), walking (8.2%), bicycle or scooter (7.7%) and motorcycle or moped (4.8%).

The population surveyed in the 10 main Spanish cities has a
43.5% their predisposition to use public transport to get to the city center from the city to carry out activities such as shopping; and 38.3% to get around on foot, especially during leisure activities. But the acceptance of other forms of mobility, such as shared cars (8.2%), motorcycles (4.7%) or bicycle/scooter (3.7%), which are mainly used to get to work or the center of the study. to go is very low.

The respondents’ opinion on the ease of travel in the city is quite positive on aspects such as lighting or road conditions in general, with car parking being the worst, as 73% of the respondents think that the ease of parking in large cities is “normal or bad”. Overall, the average rating in terms of “ease of getting around” is good, with 2.91 points out of 5, highlighting “moving around the city on a motorcycle easily”, rated as very good by 58.8% of the respondents. the the business.

According to the ranking of the 10 problems facing major cities in the Fesvial Security and Mobility Barometer 2022,
road safety is eighth, behind others, such as the state of cleanliness of the streets and the collection of waste. However, mobility and accessibility issues are the second biggest concern, with citizen safety being the first.

The survey also shows that the main Spanish cities obtain a road safety pass,
with an average rating of 2.94 points out of 5 for non-motorized users (pedestrians, cyclists and scooter users), and 3.05 points for motorized users.

The best evaluated aspects in the Fesvial Barometer are those related to the situation of road signs, traffic lights and information panels: six out of ten citizens think they are in a good or very good situation in terms of visibility, number, clarity, state of conservation and exploitation. Public transport also receives a good rating, in particular its conservation status, cleanliness, routes and connections.

The level of education in road safety of the inhabitants of large cities is where the lowest scores have been achieved, highlighting the need for awareness campaigns about new forms of mobility targeting all groups. Respondents are also in favor of imposing sanctions for non-compliance with the regulations
for all road users (pedestrians, motorists, cyclists, scooter users…).

The topics on which citizens agree most refer to the
measures that guarantee a minimum of safety on the new forms of mobility (bicycles and scooters), such as the mandatory wearing of a helmet, having insurance or the ban on driving on sidewalks and pedestrian streets.

On the contrary, the measures that receive less support, although at least with a position of more than 50%,
are the “specific” speed limits (20 km/h on roads where the pavement and road share a platform, 30 km/h on roads with only one lane in each direction), and the prohibition of access for vehicles with high emissions to the city center, or the transit of vehicles to certain parts of the city, except in the case of residents.
