DGT warns: “fine of 200 euros for driving in the middle lane”

Date:

Article 31 of the
General Circulation Regulation It is clear: «You will normally drive in the lane furthest to your right, although you may use the rest of the lanes in that direction if traffic or road conditions make it advisable, provided it is the progress of another vehicle you are following.

So the remaining lanes on your left are for overtaking, taking a turn on that side or, in heavy traffic, if there is no other way of circulating than spreading across the width of the road.

However, many do not understand it that way when they have “everything to themselves” on the highway or on the dual carriageway. And not a few
drivers have a bad habit to circulate in the middle lane, even without hindrance to do so in the right lane.

It is mandatory to drive in the right lane when it is free if you do not want to overtake.
rigorouscirculating in the left and center lanes may be penalized when the right side is clear, especially if the progress of other vehicles is impeded. In addition, keep in mind that you cannot overtake on the right.

And it’s that, exactly, through the lane more to the right
cars are not allowed to pass move more slowly to the left. This is considered a serious offense according to Article 82, Chapter VII of the General Traffic Regulations, for which the fine is 200 euros, as well as the fact that it can cause traffic jams and accidents.

So, to overtake a slower car traveling in the middle lane, you must change to the adjacent left lane. Then we will end the maneuver by returning to the right lane. Remember that
you cannot circulate while standing still in the left lane to overtake.
