Avoid a fine of up to 1,000 euros: Rules and equipment on scooters

Date:

The speed of these vehicles must be between 6 and 25 km/h, it is mandatory to have a braking system, an acoustic warning device (bell), lighting and reflective devices at the rear and front.

Vehicles for passenger transport, as laid down in the General Regulations for Vehicles, are vehicles for public transport.
one or more wheels provided with a single seat and powered exclusively by electric motors that can provide the vehicle with a
maximum design speed between 6 and 25 km/h. They can only be equipped with a seat or saddle if they are equipped with a self-balancing system. This definition excludes vehicles for people with reduced mobility.

And to find out which rules users of this type of vehicle must adhere to when moving through the city and to do so safely, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) helps us.

First, VMPs are prohibited from entering sidewalks, pedestrian areas, crosswalks, highways, two-lane roads, interurban roads, or tunnels in urban areas. The routes that are allowed to circulate are indicated by a municipal regulation. If not, circulation is allowed on any urban road.

The DGT is also preparing a manual with technical specifications. After publication and after the expiry of 24 months, all VMPs must carry a certificate of circulation to ensure minimum safety requirements.

Likewise, since the speed of these vehicles must be between 6 and 25 km/h, it is mandatory to have a braking system, an acoustic warning device (bell), lights and reflective devices at the front and rear.

And it is important to remember that driving an electric scooter under the influence of alcohol and other drugs can lead to a fine of between 500 and 1,000 euros depending on the alcohol content or 1,000 if it concerns drugs. In addition, if the test is positive, the vehicle is immobilized, as is the case with other vehicles. For using the mobile phone while driving a scooter or any other means of communication, the fine is 200 euros.

The same amount must be paid by those who wear headphones; if you drive at night without lighting or reflective clothing and if you do not wear a helmet, if the municipal ordinance deems this measure mandatory.
