When is it mandatory to put snow chains in the car?

Date:

With the red risk level due to snowfall, the DGT requires the fitting or use of special tires for safety and to avoid a fine

In these days of intense cold and heavy snowfall, it is essential to check the condition of the roads and put the snow chains in the boot. It is safest to avoid a fright, as well as a fine. And it is that, depending on the accumulated snow, the DGT establishes four alarm levels: green, yellow, red and black.

In the first, when it starts to snow, the speed is reduced to 100 km/h on highways and dual carriageways and 80 km/h on conventional roads. When yellow, the speed drops to 60 km/h and trucks and trailers are not allowed to drive.

From that moment on,
in the red and black levels, is when it is mandatory to drive “with chains or special tires 30 km/h”, explains Tráfico. This happens when the road is already covered and before the thickness of the snow makes driving impossible, at which point the black level is activated.

There is also the alternative of winter tires, adapted for driving in areas with temperatures below seven degrees below zero.

At the red level means not wearing chains
risk a fine. A penalty that can amount to 200 euros, although it does not entail a loss of points. What is not mandatory is to take them with you in the car, but it is mandatory to put them on when it starts snowing and the road condition is red.

Likewise, if a traffic cop directs you to post them. If you don’t have them, there are only two options: immobilize or flip the vehicle.
