More than 1,250 million euros to strengthen the microchip industry in Spain

Date:

The public accounts designed for next year provide for a loan to Semys, the public SEPI company that manages the PERTE chip, of 800 million euros in credits and 450 million in transfers for assistance to companies, companies, public entities, foundations and autonomous communities

Spain has already taken the first step towards becoming a European reference in the production and supply of microchips and semiconductors. The target is based on the fact that 20% of the world’s chips will be produced in the Old Continent by 2030, as today we barely control 10% of the global semiconductor market. To this end, the European Chip Act will jointly mobilize more than 43,000 million euros in investments from both the public and private sectors.

So, to get on that train, the First Vice President and Minister of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation,
Nadia Calvinoannounced yesterday at the first meeting of the PERTE Chip Special Commissioner that more than EUR 1,250 million has been earmarked for the development of this ambitious project, aimed at strengthening the microchip industry in Spain to become one of the European leaders in this fundamental sector for the new digital economy.

He reported that the first calls for support will be launched in the first half of 2023 under the European Union’s state aid. Previously, depending on needs, consultations and expressions of interest will be launched to narrow the scope of the action. The public accounts designed for next year provide for a loan to Semys, the public SEPI company that manages the PERTE chip, of 800 million euros in credits and 450 million in transfers for assistance to companies, companies, public entities, foundations and autonomous communities.

In the six months since the launch of the PERTE chip, concrete progress has been made, such as the recent announcement by CISCO that it will install its first European chip design center in Barcelona. Earlier, INTEL and the Centro Nacional de Supercomputación – Barcelona Supercomputing Center announced the agreement to open a design lab.

At the first meeting of the semiconductor industry, in which more than 50 companies, representatives of research centers and public companies participated, the Special Commissioner for the PERTE Chip,
Jaime Martorell, has underlined the talent and quality of Spanish engineers, who have formed a solid microelectronics ecosystem “that we want to strengthen by contributing more activities and companies. Chips are a strategic product and this industry is developing rapidly, so we are speeding up the process.”

To this end, the Commissioner recently accompanied the Spanish delegation led by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to Samsung’s headquarters in Korea.

The entities participating in the meeting also highlighted the value of national talent and the need to attract international talent. On the other hand, they were interested in the financial instruments that will be used to strengthen the existing ecosystem, as well as the IPCEI (Important Project of Common European Interest).

The government maintains a permanent dialogue with domestic and foreign industry to promote the tractor projects and specify the actions of the PERTE, with a special focus on building production and design capacity.
