The fines you can get if you run out of fuel on the highway

Date:

Besides being a nuisance, what you do after you get stuck can be grounds for a fine

It is a very annoying and awkward situation. Getting stuck on the road due to lack of fuel can happen through a mistake, believing that the reserve will give more than itself, or not finding a refueling point when needed. But besides being annoying, if it happens to you, it can also lead to a fine from the DGT. Although the General Traffic Regulations do not set penalties for running out of fuel or battery, the fine may depend on what you do next and may even be high.

To avoid this, you need to be clear about what you need to do to avoid the fine and also to ensure your safety and that of other road users. Therefore, there are two fines that relate to how to leave the vehicle parked when it can no longer be driven. The rule requires that “a vehicle stopping or parking on interurban roads must always be done off the road, on the right side of the road and with the passable part of the shoulder kept clear.” In case of non-compliance, the fine is 200 euros.

The same amount is a fine for negligent driving if the rule requiring diligent and careful driving is broken “to avoid any harm, your own or that of others, taking care to protect both the driver himself and the other occupants of the car does not endanger the car, vehicle and other road users. In addition, the third fine of 200 euros can come if the traffic police officers notice that you are pushing the vehicle by hand.

Once the vehicle is properly parked, the next step should be to indicate its position to notify other drivers. There is the option to install the classic warning triangles and the reflective vest or to use the new V-16 beacon. Failure to comply with this procedure will result in a fine of 80 euros.

In addition, if, having made all the previous moves, you decide to walk to the nearest gas station, you need to take into account one important detail. If you are transporting the fuel you need to at least start the vehicle, you must do so in an approved container, otherwise you risk a fine of up to 3,000 euros. Finally, if at any point the officers believe that you have left the car behind, the fine can be up to a further 1,500 euros.
