Hyundai: ‘Governments should not waste time with the chicken and the egg’

Date:

Asian companies are known for their secrecy and difficulty in accessing top management positions. Therefore, that the Spaniards
Jose Munoz Standing at the top of the Hyundai Group, as Director of Global Operations and as President of the entire Americas region, from Alaska to Patagonia, is testament to his executive quality.

Responding exclusively to the CEO,
Jae Hoon ChangMuñoz is in one of its manufacturer’s finest moments, as so far this year Hyundai Motor Company – also adding Kia’s figures – has become the third largest manufacturer in the world, surpassing or surpassing the Renault-Nissan Alliance in volume Stellantis.

In a meeting with ABC, the manager stated that ”
This is the first time in history this has happened. and that is no coincidence, it is part of our strategy. The product, marketing and management are good,” he says, as if his group’s figures are the logical result of a simple comparison.

“In 2020, Hyundai’s automotive division
entered $ 230,000 million. Only Toyota achieves that with 257,000 million. For reference, Ford reached 127,000, while Nissan reached 74,000,” he stated. For next year, it estimates that its brands’ growth will be around 4 or 5%, something its competitors are afraid to claim.

“When I got into this industry,
Spain produced more cars than South Korea. I continue to see Spain as a country that should benefit from the changes and look forward and not back,” he said.

However, he points out that this is one of the problems of Europe in general and Spain in particular: the lack of bipartisan consensus on the car. “In the U.S [donde Muñoz tiene las oficinas] there are several elements that cause a lot of division between the Democratic and Republican parties,
but the car generates a 100% union. They want there to be less foreign dependency because it is one of the most important sectors of their economy.

In this regard, Muñoz believes that globalization has come to an end, at least to the extent it has developed over the past three decades. “If we could go to another country and save half a dollar, we would, but it has now been shown that this model is not sustainable if there are logistical or production issues.”

This is why protectionism has developed in the US – to get the maximum subsidy for purchasing an electric car in the US, it must come from a North American factory – something that Europe should follow.

“When I look at Europe, it is one of the most competitive and mature markets. If you want to stay relevant in the automotive industry, I think you need to localize your industries.
Governments cannot waste time asking whether the chicken or the egg came first and they have to invest in the first thing they catch,” he says.

«
If you have car factories with no parts around, you can’t be competitive. If you don’t have regular suppliers, it’s hard to decide to build a new car factory. Spain has always done well to have parts factories before manufacturers and I think it should take advantage of initiatives like Perte to attract foreign investment.
