The DGT shows where ice caps can be found on the road

Date:

Low temperatures cause much of the snow that has fallen to freeze to ice.

The low temperatures turn the snow into ice, which makes the situation very dangerous if we have to take the car. Therefore, it is useful to know how to detect and successfully overcome an ice layer. First, you need to be aware of the outside temperature; If your vehicle has a thermometer, you will be alerted if the temperature drops below freezing (
below 3ºC). With a few exceptions, you will not find a completely icy road here, but unexpected slabs. It is advisable to take long marches and drive more carefully in shaded areas and bridges as directed by the DGT.

Particular attention should also be paid to the road: the glossier the asphalt, the greater the likelihood of ice spots. When you finally get on it, the car
you lose grip and control for a moment. The most appropriate and most important thing is to take your foot off the accelerator pedal, do not brake and keep your hands firmly on the steering wheel. On ice, the tires (except winter tires) have no grip: braking, accelerating or turning the steering wheel would be even worse.

“In the event that the car loses control, it is best that the car slides off the plate without accelerating and brakes very gently to avoid locking the wheels and until it regains traction; if that doesn’t work, the steering wheel should be turned in the opposite direction to where the nose of the vehicle is pointing,” he explains.
Javier Cabanasdirector of the ALD Automotive Driving School.

“You have to pay special attention to the shady parts of the road, because they usually freeze permanently” and appeals to drivers’ responsibility: “When you get behind the wheel, if there is an option, you should try to central hours of the day, when temperatures are higher and many ice sheets have disappeared,” he added.

Also with frost
Significantly increase the braking distance, so the vehicles have to increase the safety distance between them to have time to react to unforeseen events. When it snows and becomes hard, it is advisable to follow the tracks of other vehicles and not get out of them, as the wheels lose traction and thus control of the car.

Without snow tires or chains, stop at a service area or find a safe place and wait for the snow to stop or for the snow plows to clear the road. And soften the maneuvers and gently modulate the pressure on the brake pedal.

However, if the ice has already formed, the ruts are the most dangerous area to drive. In this case, if we see that the appearance is shiny, then it is better to drive on the “untrodden zone” of the road.
