Drivers should pay attention to road signs and warnings indicating the danger of the roads, or even if they are closed to traffic due to the severity of the snowfall.
When the weather conditions deteriorate, with rain, snow or ice on the road,
caution is advised, and take into account the recommendations of the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT). Drivers should pay attention to road signs and warnings indicating the danger of the roads, or even if they are closed to traffic due to the severity of the snowfall.
Snow is an element that not only significantly reduces the grip of our tires on the road. It also limits our visibility and can even
impede circulation if no strings are available. And it’s not enough to have them, you also need to know how to place them.
For this reason, the DGT reminds us of the color code with which it reports whether Spanish roads are passable or not. The green color indicates the first alert level, i.e. when it starts to snow. The speed in these cases is limited to 100 km/h on motorways and dual carriageways and 80 km/h on conventional roads. Trucks must drive in the right lane and are not allowed to overtake. It is advisable to avoid the ports, to be extremely careful and to pay close attention to the weather reports.
The yellow color is the second warning level of the color code established for snow conditions. In this case, the snow falls continuously and begins to settle on the road, so the difficulties are greater when driving. When we see this sign on the road, we must take into account that the movement of trucks and articulated vehicles is prohibited. Cars and buses are not allowed to drive faster than 60 km/h. As a recommendation, you should avoid sudden maneuvers and, if you are in a curve or on a downhill road, reduce your speed further.
The red color is the third level. In this case, the road is covered with snow, so the ban on articulated vehicles, trucks and buses is maintained. the rest of the vehicles are advised not to circulate. You should not pass immobilized vehicles if you are unsure whether you can continue. You may only drive with chains or winter tires and the maximum permitted speed is 30 km/h.
Finally, the black color indicates that there is a lot of snow on the road. Driving is prohibited due to the thickness of snow or ice. There is a risk of becoming immobilized. If a vehicle is blocked on the road, the engine should be used as much as it takes to have heating. The vehicle should not be left without shelter nearby. To avoid hindering the work of the snowplows and rescuers, park as far to the side as possible and if it is a multi-lane road, avoid the roads on the left.
