Long-distance movements have increased by 7% compared to January 2022, while the number of accidents has decreased by 24%
In the month of January, 69 fatal road accidents were recorded, killing 76 people, 24 fewer than in the same month of 2022. This fall in the number of accidents occurred in a context of
greater number of rides (+7%); Specifically, 31.8 million long-distance movements were recorded throughout the month, compared to 29.7 million in January 2022.
Surprisingly, however, 10 of these tourism fatalities were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. And it is that the belt is one of the
fundamental pillars of road safety and it is more than well known to all drivers, both its use and its mandatory nature.
Again, conventional roads remain the routes with the highest number of fatal accidents – almost 8 out of 10 fatalities. Depending on the type of accident, the number of road deaths will be reduced from 40 deaths in January 2022 to 28 in January this year.
On the other hand, according to the means of transport, the number of vulnerable deaths has decreased by 6 this month, despite registering 2 more deaths on mopeds than in the same month of 2022.
Finally, Aragon, the Canary Islands, Madrid and La Rioja, according to the autonomous communities, have registered 3 more deaths than in the month of January 2022, while Andalusia is the region with the largest decrease with 17 fewer deaths.
