The Ministry of the Interior reminds you in which situations you should turn on your vehicle’s headlights
With winter time, the days are shorter and it gets dark earlier. Therefore, be aware of this change and turn on the car lights when necessary. The General Directorate of Traffic reminds us that it is very important to turn on your car’s headlights in order to have a good view of the road and to be seen and to avoid accidents.
Since 2011, all new cars in Europe must have daytime running lights, but they do not replace low beam or fog lights. According to various road safety studies by DGT, during the day, regardless of the time of day, a car with daytime running lights can be seen from 240 meters away.
According to current regulations, it is mandatory to keep the dipped headlights on during the day, not only between sunrise and sunset, but also in the following cases:
– When driving through tunnels, underpasses or sections marked with the Tunnel sign (S-5).
– In reversible, extra lanes or in the opposite direction to improve traffic flow.
– On poorly lit roads or when visibility is poor, e.g. when it is raining.
– Motorcycles must always have dipped headlights on during the day and outside the aforementioned cases.
– The main beam or main beam must be on when driving outside the city at more than 40 km/h between dusk and dawn. For everyone’s safety, remember to alternate between long and short in case you encounter another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction to avoid dazzling.
The front fog lamps should be switched on in fog or in extreme weather conditions such as heavy rain or snow. The rear fog lights are only activated in very dense fog, as they can dazzle following vehicles.
As stipulated in the regulations, failure to use the correct lighting is considered a serious offense and is punishable by a fine of 200 euros.
