The obligation to wear a helmet and avoid sidewalks are two of the novelties of the new traffic law
More and more users are switching from the car to new forms of mobility, such as electric scooters or bicycles. Although they seem simple means of transport, we have to pay close attention to the rules, because as they are vehicles, they are subject to current legislation, and if they are not complied with, we can impose sanctions.
In addition, on March 21, the new traffic law came into effect, which, regarding electric scooters, contains a series of references for their correct use.
The aim of the DGT is that the Act reflects the changes that have taken place in urban mobility, with a special focus on electric scooters. In this sense, NIU has launched a series of good use tips that avoid the sanctions envisaged in Spain by said law.
⦁ Avoid the sidewalks and drive through the designated lanes
The new law states that scooters are not allowed to ride on sidewalks, pedestrian areas, highways or freeways. In return, you can do this via the designated lanes, with the assurance that on single-lane roads, any vehicle you want to overtake must leave a minimum distance of 1.5 meters and even the opposite direction. In addition, you should not encounter parked or stopped vehicles in these specific lanes, an offense considered serious and punishable by a fine of 200 euros.
⦁ Wear the helmet
The new standard specifies that all drivers of personal mobility vehicles (VMP), including electric scooters, must wear an approved helmet, a measure included in the parliamentary debate on said law, which entails penalties of up to 200 euros and the immobilizing the scooter for violators when the relevant regulations are developed.
⦁ No alcohol tolerance for minors
Since many users of electric scooters are minors, they are the main recipients of another rule introduced by this new law, as an alcohol rate of 0.0 will be applied to them, with fines of up to 1,000 euros, if the authorities discover that they have been drinking or have a positive drug test.
⦁ The mobile (and its music), or touch them
The mobile phone is undoubtedly a distraction for the driver, which is why the new traffic law punishes with the loss of six points and a fine of 200 euros if it is carried in the hand while driving or if one is used. listen to music.
⦁ One scooter, one passenger
Personal Mobility Vehicles (PMV) such as electric scooters can only carry one person on board. Traveling with an extra passenger incurs a fine of 100 euros for the offender.
⦁ Travel illuminated at night
If you use your electric scooter at night, you should know that you must equip yourself with reflective clothing or other elements that make you visible to other road users. For its part, the scooter must also be equipped with an approved lighting system. If one of the two conditions is not met, they can impose a penalty of 200 euros on you.
