Mazda CX-60: letter of intent

Date:

With powerful engines and great build quality, the CX-60 competes in the premium category

With the latest Mazda3 and CX-5, the Hiroshima-based company took a step in quality to close the gap with the so-called premium brands. Now, with the launch of the new Mazda CX-60, the Japanese manufacturer confirms its status and is fully engaged in the battle for the
premium SUV rival models such as the BMW X3, Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60.

The target is ambitious and it will not be easy to subtract sales from mainly German brands, but the CX-60 has the necessary pits:
image, refinement, quality and technology In addition, it offers powerful mechanics and the already traditional Mazda driving experience that successfully combines ride comfort and dynamic response.

Of
4,745 mm long, 1,890 wide and 1,680 high, the CX-60 is a large SUV and the model responsible for the launch of Mazda’s new modular platform that allows for the mounting of longitudinal engines and rear-wheel drive, another sign that we are dealing with a superior product. And not only does it launch a platform, the CX-60 is the brand’s first plug-in hybrid and also the most powerful model in its history, with 327 hp.

Mazda’s sales have grown exponentially in recent years and the Kodo (Soul in Motion) design language is largely responsible for this success. The Kodo design is both elegant and aggressive and is characterized by its flowing lines, with a long hood which, on the CX-60, is combined with a flat and robust front with the evolved wing-shaped grille, a signature Mazda ID , accompanied by a few
Optical groups with LED technology for all its standard functions

When it comes to customization, Mazda offers:
18 or 20 inch alloy wheels and up to eight body colors including, in addition to the already familiar Machine Gray and Soul Red Crystal, the new Rhodium White. According to the brand, it is inspired by Japanese aesthetics and, unlike conventional pearl finishes, has a more violent shine and denser particle texture.

The quality and attention to detail that Mazda has put into its new flagship is undoubtedly one of the model’s strengths. Featuring natural maple wood, premium leather and trim and moldings that are a sight to behold and a joy to touch,
the first impression we have when opening the doors is excellent

That first impression is preserved once we sit in the chair and, accompanied by a
sober and elegant designwe liked the ergonomics: the gear lever and multimedia controls are within easy reach, the controls are perfectly laid out for quick and easy operation and the driving position is comfortable.

With regard to the latter, two things should be noted: on the one hand, Mazda has developed a more compact gearbox that allows better pedal alignment and thus a more comfortable driving position; on the other hand, the
new Kinematic Posture Control (KPC) system automatically adjusts the seat to achieve the ideal driving position based on our height and eye height.

The space in the back is good (5 cm more for the legs than the CX-5). In addition, the access is very comfortable thanks to the opening of almost 90 degrees that the doors offer. Passengers in the second row enjoy climate control controls and two USB type C connections. As for the trunk, the CX-60 has a good capacity, one of the best in its category, at 570 litres.

The interior of the Mazda CX-60 is completed with a level of technology that matches:
two 12.3-inch screens for the instrument panel and multimedia system and a large projection Head Up Display (HUD) on the windshield (three times larger than that of the Mazda CX-30).

The infotainment system includes the latest version of Mazda Connect, which includes improvements such as faster boot up, higher picture and sound quality, integrated 3D gyro sensor and a word search function that allows the user to search for destinations by simply entering words. In addition, it is compatible with:
Apple CarPlay and Andorid Auto wireless standard Connectivity is completed with the MyMazda mobile application, which, for example, allows you to remotely lock and locate the vehicle.

Mazda’s new SUV offers three versions: a plug-in hybrid, a diesel and a petrol. The first to hit the market is the PHEV. It combines the operation of a 2.5 liter four-cylinder petrol engine with 190 hp and 261 Nm of torque with that of a 173 hp and 270 Nm electric motor.
The total power of the set is 327 hp and 500 Nm maximum torque Coupled as standard with a newly developed automatic gearbox and the i-Activ all-wheel drive, the CX-60 plug-in hybrid accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 200 km/h.

The battery that powers the electric motor has a capacity of 17.8 kWh and allows the approval of a
autonomy in 100% electric mode of 63 kilometers, so the CX-60 carries the DGT’s low-cost Zero Emissions label. With a maximum charging power of 7.2 kW in alternating current, a full charge of the battery takes 2 hours and 20 minutes.

The petrol and diesel Mazda CX-60 mount
3 and 3.3 liter six-cylinder in-line engines respectively. Mazda has not communicated the power, but we do know that they will be associated with a light hybridization system and therefore will have the Eco label. With the automatic transmission you can always choose between rear or four-wheel drive.

During the test of the CX-60 that we were able to perform on the roads of Cascais and Estoril, the dynamic response and driving comfort of the CX-60 formed the basis for the sensations of a premium car that we already saw in the passenger compartment.

On fast roads, it has a driving category and is surprised by how well it is soundproofed, the noise of the petrol engine is barely perceptible inside. In addition, the suspension, although it is tuned quite firmly, filters out irregularities well.
The direction, exactly, has a certain sporty touch and on twisty roads it helps guide the car, which commendably follows the line. In that sense, it’s surprising that, despite the more than two tons that the plug-in hybrid version weighs, the CX-60 unfolds quite freely.

The plug-in hybrid system, in turn, offers excellent performance and the automatic transmission works well. There is nothing to fault the CX-60 in this section.

The Mazda CX-60 is offered in four trim levels:
Prime Line, Exclusive Line, Takumi and Homura At the moment we only know the prices of the plug-in hybrid version that start at 50,268 euros for the Prime-Line version and go up to 61,868 euros with the Takumi finish, the most luxurious.
