In the cumulative figure for the year, sales of passenger cars and SUVs also fell 11.8%, dropping 233,509 units
Passenger car and SUV registrations registered a 12.1% decline in April compared to the same month of the previous year, with a total of 69,111 units. The microchip crisis and the slow economic recovery, exacerbated by the uncertainty arising from the international context, are fundamental factors for the evolution of demand for new vehicles. In the first four months there is already an 11.8% decline, with 233,509 units.
The average CO2 emissions of cars sold in April is 121.8 grams of CO2 per kilometer travelled, 4.4% lower than the average emissions of new cars sold in April 2021.
The strong decline in the rental channel, with a decrease of 40.6%, is an important factor in determining the slow evolution of the market. The private and corporate channel, on the other hand, experienced a less pronounced decline. Over the past month, retail sales were down 1.4%, at 28,942 units, while business channel purchases were down 2.9%, at 28,111 units.
Aranzazu Murodirector of economics and logistics at Anfac, explains that “the slow access of vehicles to the points of sale, caused by the microchip crisis, and a demand increasingly determined by economic uncertainty, is making recovery more difficult. We are going through a difficult economic context for consumers, which is reflected in the low growth of the individual and business channel, which has hardly stimulated the sales evolution and slowed down their purchase decision. The recovery of the market must be a priority so as not to lose the relevance that the sector contributes to both GDP and employment in our country».
For his part,
Raul Morales, director of communications at Faconauto, indicated that «the sensations are not good, because in addition to the lack of supply, as there is still not enough stock, a lack of demand has also been clearly noted in April. The families believe that the context, with an economic recovery on hold due to the effects of the war in Ukraine, is not the best to purchase a vehicle and postpone their visit to the dealers».
Finally, according to Ganvam’s communications director,
Tania Puche, «the market continues without rearing its head. In fact, we haven’t seen a month of April with a comparable number of registrations for the past decade, bringing us back to the records of the economic crisis of the time. In a context of lack of supply, in which more cars over 15 years old are already being sold than new ones, the renovation of the park becomes an important point to promote decarbonisation. In that sense, in addition to encouraging electrification, a much more active and effective scrapping policy is needed, especially aimed at these older vehicles.
