Sustainability made simple: The new Kia Niro accelerates the transition to the electric car

The South Korean brand’s popular crossover, Kia Niro, has been completely redesigned to meet the diverse needs of environmentally conscious car users. Three state-of-the-art electrified powertrains, sustainable interior materials and high safety are combined in the new generation Niro, which facilitates the transition to sustainable mobility through a range of powertrains: hybrid electric HEV (from € 24,200), plug-in hybrid PHEV (from 26,400 euros) and electric battery BEV (from 27,400 euros). The prices include discounts for financing with the brand, for delivery of the used car and those corresponding to the Moves III Plan. The HEV and PHEV versions also have a Kia 1.6-litre GDI petrol engine. The electric Niro offers ecological and practical benefits, such as an emission-free range of 463 kilometers.

Measuring 4.42 meters in length, 1.82 meters in width and up to 1.57 meters in height, the new Niro body offers improved interior proportions that give occupants class-leading interior space and storage capacity, at 451 litres. The dashboard and driver controls are minimally complex and smooth lines provide an intuitive, distraction-free user experience. The head-up display (HUD) system improves safety and comfort while driving.

Hybrid HEV and plug-in hybrid PHEV models are equipped with Kia’s efficient 1.6-litre GDI petrol engine, combined with a second-generation six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The innovations of the second-generation GDI engine include the elimination of reverse gear using the petrol engine; instead, the car reverses solely on the electric motor, eliminating tailpipe emissions when reversing.

In the hybrid HEV model, the combination of the four-cylinder 105 hp engine and the 32 kW electric motor delivers a combined maximum power of 141 hp. A 62 kW electric motor combined with the 105 hp petrol engine in the plug-in hybrid PHEV version results in a maximum combined power output of 183 hp and provides an emission-free electric range of up to 65 km, suitable for most daily commutes.

The 100% electric e-Niro version combines its great autonomy of 463 kilometers with an output of 150 kW (204 hp) is available between 6,000 and 14,600 rpm and the instantaneous torque reaches 255 newton meters, with a top speed of 167 km/h and a 0-100 km/h time of just 7.8 seconds. On the electric e-Niro, with a DC fast charger, it takes just 43 minutes to charge from 10 to 80% on the 64.8 kWh battery. At low temperatures, to warm it up, the system performs preconditioning based on browser data, if a charging point is selected as the destination. This helps to shorten charging time and optimize battery performance.

In the interior, the new Niro has improved proportions compared to the current model. Overall greater interior space and ergonomic improvements provide exceptional space for the front occupants, including a new passenger seat; when the car is stationary and the front passenger presses a button, the seat rises and reclines to maximize comfort and support the resting position. The driver is surrounded by an asymmetrical dashboard, which curves around the cockpit to place all necessary controls within easy reach. Two 10.25-inch (26 cm) screens display vehicle and navigation information, while a touchscreen controls the infotainment system and heating.

A 10-inch (25 cm) Head-Up Display projects essential driving information, such as speed, data from driver aids and navigation commands, onto the windshield. An advanced voice control system with natural language recognition technology allows occupants to control key vehicle systems such as temperature and audio settings. The power tailgate can be opened automatically by detecting the user’s smart key.

The Niro is equipped with a comprehensive range of advanced driver assistance systems. This is distinguished by the assistant to prevent frontal collisions, which warns and stops the vehicle in the event of possible incidents with other road users or pedestrians; the exit and intersection functions ensure safety when cornering and can even stop the vehicle if there is crossing traffic on the left or right.

Another of the many functional devices added to the new Niro is the Intelligent Remote Parking Assist, which allows the driver to get out of the car before finishing parking and complete the maneuver at the touch of a button. In tight parking spaces, the vehicle can park itself by driving straight ahead or back, thanks to panoramic cameras and ultrasonic sensors.

The Niro’s range of Intelligent Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS) includes devices such as Forward Collision Avoidance Assist that provides audible and visual warnings to the driver or even brakes if it detects a potential collision with other users of the car. road or with pedestrians.

Other driver assistance features include Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Following Assist, Freeway Management System, Distracted Driving Alert, High Beam Assist, GPS-based Smart Cruise Control, Navigation, Blind Spot Collision Avoidance Assistance, Rear View Monitor and Avoidance assist in rear collisions.
