The DGT recommends following a set of rules for narrowing roads
The arrival of good weather and the end of restrictions after Covid-19 encourage excursions and weekend getaways. If we go by car and we leave the main roads, it is possible that we can enjoy mountain roads, normally narrow, in which two vehicles do not fit in part of the narrowing.
If this happens to us, for example on a bridge where only one vehicle is passing, it is important to slow down and see if another driver, driving in the opposite direction, is already crossing it. The matter is simple: he arrived first and has right of way. In this case, we have to stop to let him leave. Instead, if both arrive at the same time, the priority signals dictate “sentence”: the square with the blue background allows it; the circular, of prohibition, prefers the opposite direction.
From the DGT they indicate that you have to imagine whether the narrow passage is a long and curved part. No one comes, you come in and in the middle of the box you see another vehicle driving in front of you. Impossible to know who arrived first. The vertical signs again point to the one who passes first and has to back up.
It is also possible that road works are temporarily narrowed due to road works. In this case, follow the instructions of the personnel controlling the passage. As other vehicles are waiting to pass, we have to stop close to the right so as not to get in the way.
The traffic rules in force in Spain maintain a clear order of preference, always in favor of vehicles with greater maneuvering difficulties, which, however, can be modified with the orders of the agents or the directions of the work staff and that of the attendant of special vehicles. Although in a narrow passage without signalling, preference is given to who would have come first, if in doubt, this is the order:
1. Special vehicles: they have priority over the other vehicles in the special transport regime that exceed the masses or dimensions specified in the regulations.
2. Groups of vehicles: except for passenger cars with trailers up to 750 kg. and motorhomes.
3. Animal-drawn vehicles.
4. Cars with trailers up to 750 kg. of maximum authorized mass and motorhomes.
5. Passenger cars.
6. Trucks, tractor-trailers and vans.
7. Passenger cars and vehicles derived from passenger cars.
8. Special vehicles: which do not exceed the masses or dimensions specified in the legal standards for vehicles, quadricycles or light quadricycles.
9. Tricycles, motorcycles with sidecars and three-wheeled mopeds.
10. Motorcycles, two-wheel mopeds and bicycles.
Obviously, the emergency service is a priority over all others mentioned above. Police, fire, civil defense and rescue and healthcare vehicles circulating in emergency service are considered a priority.
