Five parts of the car that fail most in the summer

Date:

The engine, tires and brakes are among the elements that we need to pay more attention to in the coming weeks

Although summer does not officially start until June 21, the heat is already there. The high temperatures have become noticeable in much of the national territory and also affect the proper functioning of vehicles.

For this reason, it is essential to consider the parts of the cars that are most likely to fail due to high temperatures.
reduce the risk of a malfunction From the Spanish Association of Cooperative Entities of the Administration of the Technical Inspection of Vehicles (AECA-ITV), they explain them to us:

The engine: If the engine starts to warm up way above normal while driving, it is recommended to stop (before the cylinder head or any other element can be damaged), wait for the engine temperature to drop and check the coolant level. In fact, before traveling, and especially during the summer, it is important to check the level and condition of all the vehicle’s fluids (coolant, brakes, oil, wipers, etc.).

The turbocharger: It is one of the components most affected by high temperatures because of its location not easily accessible for refrigeration and it is the oil itself that is responsible for its lubrication and cooling. To avoid damage to this part of the vehicle, when you arrive at your destination, it is recommended that you run the engine for a few minutes to cool it down and avoid turning it off suddenly as the oil will deteriorate and damage the turbine shaft.

The tires: High temperatures are the biggest enemy of tires, which is why blowouts are much more common in summer. It is essential that the pressure of all four wheels of the car is checked regularly, and especially before driving. Keep in mind that the lower the tire pressure, not only will it increase fuel economy, but it will also be easier to get a blowout.

the breaks: On vacation it is normal to overload our vehicle with luggage. That extra weight, along with the high outside temperatures, causes the brakes to run hotter than usual. To avoid problems with the brakes, in addition to checking the condition of the brake calipers, pads and discs, the brake fluid level should also be checked and, if necessary, replaced before each ride or according to the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions.

The air conditioning: It is recommended to check the air conditioning circuit before going on a long trip, especially if it has not been used for many months. And it is that the temperature changes that the vehicle is exposed to can cause minor gas leaks in the system. To maintain the proper functioning of the air conditioning, a gas charge can be used every two years, although it is advisable to check the circuit as directed by the vehicle manufacturer.
