The best laptop for less than 1,000 euros, according to the OCU

Date:

When buying a device it is important that it has the best possible features, that it fits the needs and of course that it has an affordable price.

We are in a time when technology is very much present in our lives. Mobile phones, tablets and computers have become a fundamental part of society. Despite the fact that computers have been present in our lives for many years, with the advent of the pandemic and telecommuting or online classes, they have become an elementary object of everyday life.

But they are used not only to work, but also to watch series, play games, listen to music and countless other things. Therefore, when buying a device it is important that it has the best possible features, that it adapts to the needs of the buyer and of course that it has an affordable price. That is why the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) recommends the best laptop for less than 1,000 euros.

This Windows laptop has the special feature that the screen can be rotated so that it can also be used as a tablet, a real 2 in 1. In addition, the screen is 13.3 inches and weighs 1.1 kg, so that due to its size is perfect for transporting it.

Features and benefits

-Features a 10-core Intel Core i5-1235U processor, 8 GB RAM and a 256 GB SSD (Solid State Drive) for storage.

-The screen is good with bold and vibrant colors. However, there is some light pixelation in the text and in high light some reflections can be seen.

-The speakers leave a lot to be desired: they lack bass, the sounds are a bit loud and muffled and the maximum volume could also be a bit higher.

-The battery life is excellent: 10 hours of internet browsing and 17 hours and 15 minutes of video playback. If the battery runs out, a quick 30-minute charge boosts the battery to 47%, giving you just under five hours of extra time.

-This laptop offers versatility in connections: on the outside there are two USB-C ports, a USB 3 port and an HDMI output. It also has a Micro SD card slot so you can transfer photos or videos from the camera. And a 3.5mm jack for headphones or microphone.

-Features a built-in fingerprint reader for secure login without password.

-It has support for Wi-Fi 6, which allows faster and more reliable connections in case of compatibility.

For those who are used to it, and who do not want to abandon the iconic Apple brand, there is also an alternative. It is true that the price is slightly above 1,000 euros, although it is possible to find it in stores for that amount.

This Apple MacBook Air is the lightest of the entire line of computers. Compared to its big brother, the MacBook Pro, it is slightly thinner and lighter.

Features and benefits

– It has the new line of Apple processors, the M1. It offers 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. A more than adequate configuration for most users.

– The 13-inch screen has an excellent quality resolution, the same as the Apple MacBook Pro (2560×1600 px), although not as bright and a little less accurate in colors, although it is one of the best screens you can find: the text is razor sharp and the colors are bright and bold.

– Battery life is excellent, with a duration of 13 hours and 30 minutes in video playback and 13 hours in our web browser test.

– The speakers are good too, with plenty of bass and clear speech.

– The weak point are the connectors: it has a 3.5mm headphone jack and only 2 USB-C (thunderbolt) ports, one of which you have to use to charge the laptop… and the other for everything else other or to connect your devices wirelessly via bluetooth, as there are no ordinary USB-A ports to connect peripherals to, and no HDMI either. It also does not have a memory card slot.

– It has wifi 6.

Before making such a big expense when buying a computer, it makes sense to think a lot about whether the one we have chosen is worth buying or not. To make this decision easier, the OCU provides three tips to keep in mind.

1. Better configuration will make your laptop last longer. The continuous progress and complexity of the software increase the demands we place on our machines. Therefore, we could conclude that every euro invested in acquiring a better version can translate into a greater number of years of service.

2. Not all powerful, expensive laptops are good. There are other characteristics that have a greater influence on the final quality of a device with these characteristics, such as the quality of the screen, the sound or the battery life. All aspects that are difficult to identify a priori. In general, notebooks with a battery capacity of 65 Wh generally receive a good rating, while notebooks below 40 Wh receive a poor rating. A large screen also consumes too much.

3. The perks affect…and shoot up the price. Therefore, before you choose, be clear about what you need and find a laptop that gives you this:

– Plenty of USB ports to connect all the peripherals you need (headphones, mouse, keyboard, smartphone charging cable, etc.).

– Video ports to connect displays (USB C or HDMI).

– Ethernet connection if you want to connect it to the router via a cable.
