Not wearing this item on a bike is a serious punishment

Date:

There are certain elements that must always be worn, whether day or night: a bell, a white position light at the front, as well as a red and a non-triangular reflector of the same color at the back.

Did you know that if your bike doesn’t have a bell, you can get a fine of up to 200 euros? So that’s it. According to the General Vehicle Regulations (RGV), article 22 states that: “bicycles and bicycles must have a bell, whereby the use of an acoustic device other than that is prohibited”. Look closely, because it even specifies that any other type of sound warning is prohibited. No bells, no sirens… it must be a doorbell.

Indeed, unlike enlightenment, which can only fine us if we don’t have it when the
visual conditions are reduced (in tunnels, at night, at sunset, fog, etc.) the bell is an essential element for the bicycle to comply with current regulations. If you don’t have a doorbell with you, you could be fined.

Therefore, the same article 22 of the RGV determines what is the lighting that bicycles must equip when riding in poor visibility:
in tunnels, at dawn and dusk, at night, in rain, fog, etc. According to the said Article 22, in Section 4: «Bicycles, which are required to ride at night on parts of the road marked with the sign ‘tunnel’ or when there are meteorological or environmental conditions which significantly reduce visibility, must have the following facilities: and rear position light, rear reflector, and may have: reflectors on the spokes of the wheels and on the pedals»

On a bike it is therefore as important to see as it is to be seen. Driving at night, going through underpasses or tunnels can be dangerous. The DGT says to put a white position light on the front of the bike. At the rear, a red position light and a non-triangular reflector in the same color.

Likewise, when the use of lighting is mandatory, cyclists
must wear reflective clothing when driving on intercity roads. I mean, it might be worth the vest. In addition, it recommends that you always, at any time and on every road wear reflective clothing that makes you more visible.
