In Estonia, state institutions and private companies have been targeted by hacker attacks after a Soviet tank monument was moved. State Secretary for IT Infrastructure Luukas Kristjan Ilves said on Wednesday that the country has been exposed to “the most extensive cyberattacks since 2007”. However, the so-called denial-of-service attacks were “ineffective” and “largely unnoticed”.
According to media reports, the Russian hacker group Killnet would have acknowledged this. In denial-of-service attacks, the affected server has limited or no access at all due to artificially high demand.
“E-Estonia is up and running”
According to the government, the websites functioned throughout the day with “minor exceptions”. “E-Estonia is up and running,” Ilvey wrote. Estonia likes to call itself “E-Estonia”.
The EU and NATO member is considered a pioneer of digitization in Europe. The approximately 1.3 million citizens can handle almost all administrative procedures via the Internet.
Estonia had Soviet tank monuments dismantled near the Estonian-Russian border town of Narva on Tuesday and moved to a museum. A large Russian minority lives in the Baltic state.
