Can’t Call 911 – Three Women Killed by Tree: Dramatic Details

Date:

The devastating storm front that broke out over Austria on Thursday afternoon killed five people. In addition to two little girls in Carinthia, three women between the ages of 52 and 58 died in Lower Austria. They were surprised by the violent storm as they walked.

In the afternoon, the three women, accompanied by two others, descended from the Herrenalm in the direction of the Taglsbach car park on the “Alpinweg” circular walk. At around 5 p.m., the storm front passed over the area, which took the five hikers completely by surprise. Due to extreme wind peaks, numerous beech and spruce trees fell. One of the trees hit the two Lower Austrians, aged 52 and 58, and the 57-year-old Upper Austrian.

No network connection
According to the police, the uninjured hikers wanted to make an emergency call, but could not because there was no mobile network. The women therefore ran to Taglsbach’s parking lot, where they met a bystander and asked to make an emergency call. This happened at 5:45 PM.

The mountain rescue service “Christophorus 15”, the fire brigade and the police were also alerted by the Red Cross. The helicopter’s emergency doctor could only determine the death of the three women. The victims were taken to a forest road by the mountain rescue service.

path remains blocked
The Alpine Police started their first investigations on Thursday evening. It was determined that the fallen trees had apparently shown no previous damage and had clearly fallen over from the storm. Due to the continuing danger, the “Alpenweg” and the forest trail/hiking trail from Seehof towards Mittersee, Obersee, Herrenalm were officially closed by the municipality of Scheibbs until next Monday.
