After the heavy rainfall in the west of the country, there is now also a risk of a lot of precipitation in the east of Austria. According to meteorologists, massive continued rain and severe weather conditions are expected in the region from Sunday morning – up to 200 liters of rain per square meter should also keep emergency services in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland on their toes.
After the heat wave, Sunday will be dominated by dense clouds in the east. According to the Central Institute of Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG), it rains regularly, sometimes persistently and heavily during the day.
There are also some cloud fields in Salzburg, Upper Austria and Styria, but here it has to stay with a few rain showers. In the west and south, on the other hand, it will generally remain sunny.
Stormfront moves east
According to the Austrian Severe Weather Center uwz.at, the low and the front, which caused the large amounts of rain in the west – Bregenz set a new 24-hour record with more than 200 liters of rain per square meter – are slowly shifting east. Local extreme precipitation can occur in a very short time.
The event focuses on the region from the eastern Weinviertel through the Marchfeld, Vienna and the Vienna Basin to the center of Burgenland. “Kachelmannwetter” even expects similar amounts of rain in the region as recently in Vorarlberg – 150 to 200 liters per square meter “are possible,” the meteorological team wrote on Twitter.
For Vienna, full monthly precipitation is in sight within 36 hours.
Dry soils aggravate the situation
The expected amount of rain in the east of the country corresponds to about half of the total precipitation that accumulated there in the previous – exceptionally dry – year 2022.
The parched soils exacerbate the situation, as flash flooding can also occur outside rivers and streams. The emergency weather center therefore called for the highest weather warning level for the affected areas.
