An animal drama has taken place in the Weinviertel: as Johann Baumschlager, Chief Inspector of the Lower Austria Police, confirmed on Tuesday, two police dogs and two other dogs died in agony. The four-legged friends were previously jogging with an assistance dog handler. Exactly why the animals died is under investigation and the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna will perform autopsies.

The incident dates from last Tuesday, reports the “Kurier”. According to the investigation, the service dog handler, who was described as experienced, was out jogging during lunch in a wooded area — with his Belgian Shepherd, a colleague’s Malinois service dog and two personal four-legged friends. According to Baumschlager, the animals wore muzzles.

Animals died on the way home from jogging
One of the dogs showed signs of exhaustion, so the officer stopped running and went home. All the animals – three Malinois and a German Shepherd – died in the man’s vehicle on the way home.

State Criminal Investigation Department determined
The officer immediately reported the incident. The State Criminal Investigation Department of Lower Austria is investigating, among other things, the use of the crime scene on the athletics track. According to Baumschlager, results from the University of Veterinary Medicine are expected next week. If there is evidence of poisoning, further investigations at a veterinary institute in Munich are considered.

suspected animal cruelty
The service dog handler is not currently used for surgery. Baumschlager stressed that this was not a disciplinary measure. The public prosecutor in Korneuburg has launched an investigation into suspected animal abuse against unknown persons.
