Texas: Extreme drought exposes dinosaur tracks

Date:

In the US state of Texas, workers at a national park have discovered numerous dinosaur footprints in a dried-up riverbed. This summer’s extreme drought has uncovered tracks filled with sediment, Stephanie Salinas Garcia, head of the agency responsible for natural parks and wildlife, said Tuesday.

The well-preserved tracks in the Paluxy River could therefore be about 113 million years old. According to Garcia, most casts come from an acrocanthosaur, a carnivorous theropod that can grow up to five meters high and weigh seven tons.

Further traces come from a Sauroposeidon, which with its extremely long neck could grow up to 18 meters long and weigh up to 44 tons. It could be the longest consecutive dinosaur tracks in North America, said Jeff Davis, director of National Parks.

Due to the numerous dinosaur footprints, the national park near the metropolis of Dallas was named Dinosaur Valley State Park (Dinosaur Valley National Park). However, its visitors will not be able to admire the footprints just discovered for long: with the first rain, they will disappear again in the waters of the Paluxy River…
