There is dismay after the tragic accident in Tyrol, in which a Jenbacher (34) between Jenbach and Stans was probably hit by a train on Tuesday and was seriously injured. The man who tried to get his dog off the track is in hospital and the dog has died.
The 34-year-old, popular in Jenbach, took his mongrel dog for a walk on the bike path along the railroad on Tuesday afternoon. He had not kept the animal on a leash – a circumstance that probably led to the tragic accident.
So far, there has only been an eyewitness to the accident, which happened around 2:30 p.m. at kilometer 42.6, so the exact circumstances have not yet been clarified. In any case, the dog suddenly ran onto the track when a train was near the track.
To prevent his animal from being run over, the 34-year-old immediately ran after the mongrel. Of course, the Jenbacher did not succeed in overtaking the animal in time. The attempt to rescue the mongrel ended fatally for the 34-year-old. The man himself fell on the track ballast and suffered serious head injuries.
Train drivers did not notice the incident
It is very likely that the victim touched the train, although the testimonials available so far do not conclusively confirm this. “No driver noticed anything of the accident during this period,” said ÖBB spokesman Christoph Gasser-Mair.
Flown to the Innsbruck clinic
A passerby immediately raised the alarm and gave the Jenbacher first aid. The emergency helicopter Heli 4 then flew the injured to the Innsbruck clinic. The clinic learned on Wednesday that the victim was in intensive care with serious injuries.
All help came too late for the mongrel dog who was on the trail. The animal died at the accident site.
