At about ten square kilometers, La Digue is the smallest of the three inhabited islands of the Seychelles – but a holidaymaker from Austria was lost in paradise for three days.
After the doctor from Salzburg went on a hiking trip and never returned to his accommodation, the landlord sounded the alarm. A search was immediately launched by the local authorities. Coastguard police, firefighters, rescue services, military personnel and volunteers rushed out to find the 63-year-old.
For days, however, without success – the fear of the doctor grew by the hour.
GPS tracking bracelets for tourists
Great relief at the end of day three: the locals were able to locate the exhausted but unharmed missing person in the middle of nowhere and lead him back to civilization. “The entire nation is relieved that the rescue was successful,” said Seychelles President Wavel Ramkalawan. He is now considering equipping hikers with GPS tracking wristbands in the future.
