According to state media, the new “fever” cases in North Korea are not a new corona outbreak. Those affected in Ryanggang province were suffering from the flu, state news agency KCNA reported Friday, citing data from the Epidemic Prevention Emergency Center.
Ruler Kim Jong Un had declared the corona pandemic defeated about two weeks ago. However, on August 23, according to KCNA, four new cases of “fever” were reported from Ryanggang province, which borders China. In connection with the corona pandemic, Pyongyang has always referred to ‘fever patients’, not corona patients – apparently due to a lack of testing capabilities.
Corona outbreak confirmed for the first time in May
North Korea closed its borders in early 2020 after the outbreak of the pandemic to protect itself from the coronavirus. In May, the isolated communist country first confirmed an outbreak of the ommicron variant in the capital Pyongyang. According to KCNA, a total of 4.8 million “fever” patients were registered, but only 74 of them died.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and other experts are strongly questioning North Korea’s corona statistics and information about containing the pandemic. According to experts, the country has one of the worst health systems in the world.
