Pursuit, firefight, including casualties, arrests: these were spectacular scenes that took place in the early morning hours on Friday in the Tyrolean lowlands. In the afternoon, the police released further details at a press conference in Innsbruck. In the meantime, the two initially fugitives, who had got out for the chase, could also be traced.
Shortly before 5 a.m., a suspicious van was targeted by a police patrol near Wörgl. The vehicle was reported stolen two days ago. An agent who registered the complaint himself recognized it immediately. When the driver saw the patrol, he pressed the gas and fled at “high speed” on the B178 Loferer Straße in the direction of St. Johann, according to the investigators.
Roadblock couldn’t stop car
Another patrol attempted to set up a roadblock near Going. But then the stolen van came along. At the last minute, the officers were able to drive away in the police car.
End point on tracks, supposed bang
St. Johann was the end of the line. “The driver did not know the area and immediately turned onto the track in the area of a level crossing, drove on for a while and then stopped,” said an investigator at the press conference. In the car were two 14-year-old Austrians and a Russian (13).
Two got out and fled. According to the officials’ initial information, they then heard a gunshot-like bang, after which fire was opened. One of the 14-year-olds was hit and injured in the hand and shoulder.
Injured boy operated on in the clinic
The injured man was taken to the Innsbruck clinic for surgery. According to researchers, there was never any danger to life. The two fugitives were located and arrested during a large-scale manhunt near a hotel complex.
According to LKA boss Katja Tersch, the van has nine bullet holes according to initial investigations. The vehicle and other traces are now being examined in detail.
13-year-old duo got out for the chase
First of all, there were two other prisoners. It turned out that they had left the van before the start of the chase in Wörgl. These people are two 13-year-old boys and they too have now been tracked down and questioned.
No strangers to the police
It is not yet clear who was driving the suspect. It is clear, however, that the alleged perpetrators are no strangers to the police. They have been in trouble with the law several times, including property crimes and bodily harm.
A total of nine patrols from the Kufstein and Kitzbühel districts, the Cobra Special Task Force and a dog unit were deployed.
