Politicians alarmed – arson on asylum accommodation in Leipzig

Date:

In the night of Saturday, unknown perpetrators threw several firebombs against the wall of an asylum seekers center. No one was injured, there was only minor material damage. But the timing of the attack may have been deliberate.

It was the last day of a week on which the racist riots in Rostock-Lichtenhagen 30 years ago were often commemorated. In August 1992, residents and neo-Nazis, to the applause of thousands of spectators, attacked and partially set fire to the central reception center for asylum seekers and a dormitory for Vietnamese workers (see video above).

There is still no information about the perpetrators in Leipzig. Investigators asked for witnesses. A political background cannot be ruled out. The “Task Force Violence” of the National Criminal Investigation Department took over the investigation. The suspicion was an attempted particularly serious arson.

All shelters are now more heavily guarded
Saxony’s Interior Minister Armin Schuster (CDU) called it a warning sign that “such inhumane crimes are not a thing of the past”. It is also thanks to the cautious security forces at the property that no one was injured and only minor material damage occurred, the CDU politician said in a tweet.

The community housing is located in a prefab building in the Lausen-Grünau district and can accommodate 225 asylum seekers. The Saxon Ministry of the Interior has now announced stricter controls on all asylum seekers’ homes.
