Cutbacks and Wastewater – No More Gas: Where Vienna Uses Waste Heat for Heating

Date:

Especially when it comes to energy prices, many Vienna currently feel that there is a new attack on their wallets every day. But countermeasures are being taken, at least when it comes to heating.

Political uncertainty, dependence on warmongers and, last but not least, speculation are pushing up energy prices and the end is not yet in sight. But how are the Viennese supposed to heat their homes in the future when gas and oil prices go through the roof? There are already interesting approaches in Vienna on how to independently supply at least a few hundred thousand households with heat. The city is dependent on sewerage or budget cuts.

Vienna sewage treatment plant
No heat should go unused – not even that of the (already cleaned) sewage! One of Europe’s largest large-scale heat pumps removes six degrees from the water before it flows into the Danube Canal. From 2027, up to 112,000 Viennese households will be supplied with heat from sewage water.

Warm cuts
The world’s largest waffle oven at the Manner production site in Hernals bakes 450 slices per minute. The residual heat from the waffle oven provides the company with energy and also transfers heat to the local district heating network. 600 households will be supplied with heat for heating and hot water.

thermal heat
From the thermal bath directly to the private bathroom: Wien Energie uses the residual heat from the thermal waste water to generate district heating. 1900 households in Oberlaa can be heated with the climate-friendly variant.

cool diplomats
Powerful chillers in the UNO City ensure that the 5,000 employees from more than 120 countries keep a cool head. Wien Energie uses the heat released during this cooling process to heat 2,400 households.

Simmering Power Plant
The large Simmering heat pump has been supplying environmentally friendly heat to around 25,000 households since 2019. It uses the residual heat from the cooling water of the Suddercentrale. For a long time it was the strongest system in Central Europe.
