209 migrants were found in an abandoned truck in eastern Mexico. Near Nuevo Teapa in the state of Veracruz, people from Central and South America were freed from the vehicle after calls for help were made. Among them were children and young people.
One migrant had to be taken to a hospital with suffocation symptoms, the rest of the rescued were still in good condition.
An intermediate ceiling was installed in the closed loading space of the truck to allow even more people to be transported. Most of the migrants came from Guatemala. The truck also contained people from Honduras, El Salvador and Ecuador, the immigration service INM announced on Thursday (local time).
Immigration authorities with huge problems
Two weeks ago, 40 migrants died and nearly 30 others were injured in a fire at an INM assembly point in the Mexican city of Ciudad Juárez on the US border. The men were trapped and could not get to safety.
The Public Prosecution Service is investigating the case on suspicion of murder. Five police officers and a migrant are being held and more arrest warrants will follow. The migrant is said to have set fire to mattresses, causing the devastating fire. The officials, in turn, would not have offered any help.
