The joy was great: little Jonas, who lost his plush mouse in the center of Freilassing at the beginning of January, was now allowed to pick up a whole family of mice from the Freilassing police station. In addition, department head Gerhard Huber surprised him with a small gift.
As reported, 3-year-old Jonas lost the orange stuffed mouse from the “Show with the Mouse” on January 4. Until now, the cuddly toy had been his constant companion and so he missed her very much. “When we realized the mouse was gone, Jonas cried terribly,” says his mother Jessica. She then looked up the route again by bike, asked in shops and finally left her details with the lost and found office. But there was no trace of the mouse. Jessica left no stone unturned and eventually reported to the Freilassing police.
“I just wanted to leave my phone number there in case a mouse was found and handed in,” said the mother. Superintendent of Police Patricia Willinger understood the situation well and then sent a “search call” to the press, which caused an uproar.
Boundless willingness to help
It was not long before the first calls came in to the Freilassing police. Many citizens offered their help. Whether from the Berchtesgadener Land, the Chiemgau, Traunstein or from Salzburg, Munich or Carinthia, many people had a similar mouse at home and wanted to donate it. Still others mailed mice or stopped by the office to hand in a “spare mouse.” In conversations they then told how the cuddly toys came into their family and that they liked to pass them on to make the boy happy.
With beaming eyes, Jonas finally opened the box containing the mice. He took them out one by one, lined them up and counted them, then took them in his arms. “But he’s happy now,” Jessica said.
“Jonas is a huge fan of the mouse show. There is even a picture of a mouse on his kindergarten backpack.” So the gift from the office was just right, because Gerhard Huber gave Jonas the blue elephant we know from the show, which the boy immediately unwrapped. While Jonas played with mouse and elephant, the mother thanked everyone for their willingness to help. “I really didn’t expect so much support for a stuffed mouse.”
